Kelsey Grammer has 'idea' for Down Periscope sequel

Kelsey Grammer has an "idea" for a sequel to Down Periscope - despite the movie not being a huge success.

The 1996 comedy-slapstick film - which saw Grammer, 70, lead as Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge, who is tasked with restoring a junked World War II-era submarine for a war game with a disorganized crew - has an 11 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and only generated $37.5 million against its $31 million production budget.

However, he does not want the movie - which also starred Rob Schneider (Executive Officer Marty Pascal), Bruce Dern (Admiral Graham), Lauren Holly (Emily) and William H. Macy (Captain Knox) - not being big to be a problem in setting sail once again for a follow-up up

In an interview with ScreenRant, Grammer was asked which roles he would like to revisit, with the first being Mayor Tom Kane from the STARZ political drama series, Boss, and the second being Tom Dodge from Down Periscope.

Grammer - who quipped that Dodge is "not exactly [Top Gun character] Maverick" and "not exactly [actor] Tom Cruise" - said: "[He's] a guy who likes being under the surface, and he knows what to do.

"I have an idea about [a sequel], [which] might be really fun."

Despite the Emmy award-winning actor being keen to reprise the role of Kane in Boss, he pointed out that "there are too many legacy producers to have it make financial sense".

Grammer added: "I'd love to revisit him. He was amazing, and to give him his departure would be great. Some things got funny with the production of that show, and we just never concluded it. And it would've been the right thing for the character and for the piece."

Elsewhere, the Hollywood legend's performance as Dr. Hank McCoy - also known as the Beast - in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, and 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past - impressed his younger children, daughter Faith, 13, and sons Gabriel, 11 and eight year old James.

Grammer - who has the trio, as well as a two-month-old son called Christopher with his wife Kayte Walsh - told E! News: "At first they were very, very sheepish about it at first. Then they finally came up and said, ‘Do you really play Beast?’

"[Their reaction was], ‘Wow! That’s cool!'"

Grammer then joked: "It was the first time I was cool. But that was pretty great.”
