James Gunn gives promising update on DCU Batman movie The Brave and the Bold
James Gunn has teased there is a “really, really good story” for The Brave and the Bold.
The upcoming superhero blockbuster will be Batman’s cinematic introduction in the DC Universe (DCU), and Gunn, 59, has now revealed good progress on The Brave and the Bold is being made.
During an appearance on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, he said: “I think we have a really, really good story now for what’s happening with Batman.”
The Brave and the Bold - which will be helmed by The Flash director Andy Muschietti - is expected to follow the Dark Knight as he fights crime in Gotham City with his son Damian Wayne, AKA Robin.
Gunn was also asked whether the Caped Crusader would wear his more traditional blue and gray suit in The Brave and the Bold, though the Superman director stressed he didn't think the look of Batman was that important.
He explained: “There’s a religious aspect to some of this stuff that’s very uncomfortable.
“Should Batman have white eyes? That’s a big subject of conversation. It’s like, ‘Guys, that’s really what matters?’
“But those are the things they care about. Should his utility belt be yellow? Should he have the yellow crest around the bat? All of that sort of stuff.
“None of those things are what’s most important to me. What matters is the character, the story.”
Gunn added he liked all versions of Batman from his appearances in the DC comics and on screen.
He said: “I think that’s one of the fun things about Batman though, is that there are so many expressions of Batman that are cool, and [having] different ways to access that character is one of the ways in which he’s so iconic. I don’t think it’s a matter of the blue and the gray or the black Batman.
“I think both those things are really cool. I like the detective Batman, but I also really like the fighter Batman, that’s just the brute that’s, you know, fighting.
“I like the silly ’50s Silver Age Batman, with Bat-Mite. I like all of these different versions of Batman.”
So far, there has been no confirmation as to who will be playing Batman in the Brave and the Bold, though several actors have thrown their hat into the ring.
Jensen Ackles recently said he would be open to playing the Dark Knight, though stressed it would be “hard to carve out something truly unique” if he were to take on the role.
When Collider asked The Boys star if he would want to play Batman, he said: “Oh, man. I don’t know. It would be hard to carve out something truly unique amongst all of the performances as Batman.
“I would probably have to lean heavily on Gunn and whoever’s directing and whoever’s writing it, and get inspiration from the text.”
Meanwhile, Alan Ritchson also expressed interest in donning the cowl in The Brave and the Bold.
During an appearance in WIRED’s Autocomplete Interview video series, he said: “Would I play Batman? Yes. Would I pay handsomely to be Batman? You wouldn't even have to pay me to be Batman.
“I would, yeah, I would don the suit. [In a Batman voice] ‘Gotham is mine.’ Look at that. I don't even have to practice. It just comes out naturally.”
