Donnie Yen to lead new John Wick spin-off film
Donnie Yen is to star in a new 'John Wick' spin-off movie.
The 60-year-old actor will reprise his role as the assassin Caine in the untitled feature that will expand the action franchise.
The movie is set to shoot in Hong Kong in 2025 and will be set after the events of 'John Wick: Chapter 4' where Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
No director has been announced for the flick but Chad Stahelski – who helmed the four previous films – is helping to develop the movie as part of a deal with Lionsgate to expand the 'John Wick' universe.
Robert Askins is writing the screenplay for the flick with Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee once again producing for their Thunder Road company.
It is the latest new project in the series as a separate spin-off, 'Ballerina', will star Ana de Armas in the lead role and is slated for release in June 2025.
Donnie said in a statement: "Working on 'John Wick: Chapter 4' was an extraordinary experience.
"The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil and Erica push themselves to create action, fights and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story and emotion.
"Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role."
Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added: "From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in 'John Wick: Chapter 4', he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an indelible mark and had fans asking for more."
